This garden brings the jungle to Australia鈥檚 drought parched landscape. Following devastating fires that swept through Melbourne last year and caused Flemings to withdraw their exhibit, their 2010 entry is lush, jungly and water filled, an adventurous outdoor living space.

Scott explains 鈥淚n Melbourne everyone is suffering from the drought so people want the lushness this garden offers鈥�

There鈥檚 a strong geometric form defining each space, diagonal lines divide up the garden into two distinct areas, a pool and relaxing spa area raised above a decked seating and cooking area. The pool and spa are shaded by a contemporary glass sided pavilion; a cut-away circular window in the roof throws a disc of light onto the inviting water below. Wide paved steps lead up to the pavilion and into the enclosed space of the garden where dense bamboo planting screens and shades the dining 鈥榬oom鈥�.

The sheer height and size of the plants and the strong structure of the leaves of Strelitzia alba are staged to give the impression of encroaching existing jungle. The leaves of this plant are 60cm wide and 1-2m long forming a canopy of lush evergreen leaves, the flowers bird like, white and greys. Cannas, phormiums, hostas and aspidistra give bulk to the planting below as well as contrasting leaf shape and leaf colour. Clumps of bamboo, Phllostachys nigra add vertical notes and enclose the dining area. Splashes of red and white in the plants mimic the colour features of the built components of the garden.

What will happen to the garden after the show?

Most of the garden will be recycled, some parts will go back to Australia, some parts will be sold off and some parts will go to voluntary organisations.
