James Alexander-Sinclair takes us on a tour of Kazuyuki Ishihara's show garden, a Silver Flora Medal Winner at this year's Chelsea.
This garden is designed as an urban roof garden that seeks to enclose the visitor in a green world. Designer Kazuyuki Ishihara says, 鈥淢y hope is the world will be filled with smiles from the flowers and greenery, and this garden is intended to be part of an urban landscape, found between buildings but also keeping out the stresses of daily life. I therefore covered almost all surfaces with plants and made one room completely green.鈥
An unusual element of this garden is the totally enclosed green room containing a large timber table and bench seat. Windows to the outside are suggested by a water curtain that separates the urban bustle from serene garden life. Outside the 鈥榬oom鈥 ponds of water counteract the 鈥榟eat island鈥 temperature effect of modern cities. Acers, irises and hostas are reflected in the water, to create a relaxing atmosphere that both visitors and wildlife will be at home in.
The green walls and white concrete are designed to evoke the sensation of time鈥檚 passage, of how the elements work their magic on surfaces; nature and the sophistication of modern life coexist in this environment.
This garden has been awarded a Silver Flora medal by the RHS.
Kazuyuki Ishihara hopes his garden inspires people to smile.
