James Alexander-Sinclair takes us on a tour of Roger Platts' garden, a Gold Medal Winner Winner at this year's Chelsea.
Roger describes this as 鈥淎 traditional themed garden, very much the sort of garden that I think people can identify and understand. It is quintessentially a British garden full of plants.鈥
His design celebrates a traditional approach, a garden that will stand the test of time. A strong, balanced design gives a framework for the complex yet beautiful planting, working with both shady and sunny aspects. A crescent shaped path of reclaimed Victorian bricks leads to a summer house of crafted Sussex oak beams. Trees within the garden form a backdrop for the rest of the planting rather than being a particular focal point. Either side of the crescent path, oak pergolas are clad with rambling roses taking the flowering profusion upwards.
Initially the centrepiece of the garden is hidden from view, a pool of tranquil rippling water is set low among a central planting of purple and silver hues of lavender and roses. Beneath the trees is a woodland planting of digitalis and hardy geraniums while box and yew hedging contain the colour scheme and maintain the lines of the design.
鈥淭he garden has separate sections which of course link and flow right through. Approached from the sunnier area the planting is full of blues, lime greens and whites of artemisia, alchemilla and nepeta and lead you directly into the summerhouse. This has very strong curves and houses a rounded set of oak table and chairs that again mirror the geometry of the paths.鈥
What will happen to the garden after the show?
Some of the plants from the garden are going to be donated to a charity, the St Joseph鈥檚 Hospice. The hospice is building a new garden at its site in North East London.
This garden has been awarded a Gold medal by the RHS.
Roger Platts reveals why it took him eight years to return to Chelsea.
