City Roof Garden
Designed by Geoff and Kas Whiten
An urban roof garden space is increasingly important today for access to the outdoors and for entertaining as developers build upwards and more people live in ever smaller spaces in our towns and cities.
This design is a small scale version of a recently developed city roof space that provided the owner with views over London as well as a private outdoor living area.
The planting and design reflect the challenges posed by creating a garden in this otherwise difficult environment – exposed to the elements, planting has to with stand drought, wind and scorching sun reflected from buildings. Shelter is created from planted beds around the main feature, a boxed seating area on natural stone paving. Drifts of ground cover planting in a gravel mulch surround groups of ornamental pots and containers.
This garden has been awarded a Bronze medal by the RHS.
