The Naturally Fashionable Garden
Designed by Nicholas Dexter
The world of textile, fabrics and fashion provide the inspiration for Nick鈥檚 garden.鈥淲e focused on how nature has constantly inspired fashion through colour, pattern and texture," he explains, "and that became the focal point of our garden.鈥
The layout of this chic, urban garden is strongly influenced by the pioneering work of avant-garde artist, Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), who showed how art could enhance any surface, not just canvas. Her stunning textile designs were all the rage in the most fashionable circles during the Art Deco era. Renowned for their vibrant colours and sharp, geometric collages, they are just as fresh, modern and relevant today.
This bold and contemporary urban garden, beautifully constructed from sumptuous and luxurious natural materials, makes a powerful style statement. By combining a defined geometric pattern, with natural elements, Nick has created an exciting composition.
The birch stumpery is inspired by the random nature of fabric fibres when viewed under an electron microscope. Water flows through the stumpery to add a subtle focal point to the garden. Repeated planting creates a calm and ordered effect, encouraging the visitor to escape from the stress of modern living.
This garden has been awarded a Silver-Gilt Flora medal by the RHS.
