Is a comedy mask a typical example of British humour?

The British people are famous for their sense of humour so could you tell me what British humour is?   Amanda, Shangdong Province

The British are very proud of their sense of humour but many non-British people find it hard to understand. What is British humour? And does history have any influence on what the British laugh at today?
