	Managers are key to how a footballer performs

Dowie has been out of work 没工作 since leaving Charlton in November after just 12 league games in charge 主管.

Adrian Heath was leading the team in a caretaker role 看管者的角色 since the previous manager was sacked 解雇 on 17 January. He left the club on Sunday after Coventry's 3-0 defeat to Leicester.

Heath said he was disappointed to learn of Dowie's appointment 任命 in the media.

"Going on" 发生 is another phrase for "happening". He means that other people knew what was happening before he was told he would no longer be in charge at Coventry.

He indicated that the club management must have made the decision carefully and the club need a period of stability to be successful.

"Everybody upstairs" 上层人士 means the management or people in charge.

Dowie seemed to be in demand 抢手 as he was also involved in talks with Leicester.

He chose to accept Coventry's offer of the job even though he also thought Leicester was "on the up" 呈上升趋势 which means they are having success at the moment.

Dowie's first test as Coventry's manager will be Tuesday's home game with Southampton.
