Battle for Survival 生存之战

A game of football
Sheffield United want to take West Ham to court
All the action in the final games of the 2006-2007 season was at the bottom end of the table as three teams locked in a life and death struggle 生死拼搏 for survival in the Premiership League.

According to the rules of the Premier League, the three teams at the bottom of the league at the end of the season are relegated 降级 to the league below.

West Ham United, Wigan and Sheffield United all fought to avoid joining Charlton and Watford in the relegation 降级(名词) positions.

Horrible feeling
It's a gut-wrenching and horrible feeling for all of us at the club.

Neil Warnock, Sheffield United manager

In the end it was Sheffield United who took the drop 掉了下去 after losing 2-1 to Wigan while West Ham beat Premiership champions Manchester United 1-0.

Neil Warnock, Sheffield United’s manager, described the result as "gut-wrenching" 腹内翻江倒海,这个俚语表达的是难以形容的悲痛,saying it was the worst feeling of his career.

But controversy surrounded 被争议所包围的 the battle for relegation as both Wigan and Sheffield United accused West Ham of breaking Premiership rules earlier in the season, and demanded that West Ham should have been docked points 被扣分.

Off the hook
Some people think West Ham have got off the hook a little bit.

Paul Jewell, Wigan manager

In April West Ham were fined 被罚款 a record ?5.5m (83m RMB) for irregularities 违规行为 in the signing 签约 of Argentinean players Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano but were not deducted any points.

The decision not to take points from West Ham has been disputed 提出争议 by Sheffield United and Wigan.

Wigan’s manager Paul Jewell said West Ham "have got off the hook" 被人放了一马, meaning that they escaped a punishment they deserved.

Neil Warnock of Sheffield also criticised Manchester United for not fielding a strong team 派遣主力阵容上场 for Saturday’s game against West Ham, suggesting that Manchester had saved their best players for next week’s FA Cup final.

Strong team
I think Sir Alex sold me a dummy in midweek when he said he would field a strong team. He has his own reasons, though. Maybe the FA Cup final next week is more important to him.

Neil Warnock, Sheffield United manager

Warnock said Sir Alex Ferguson had "sold him a dummy" 卖了一个假玩具,这里指被人骗了 earlier in the week when he promised a strong team for the West Ham game.

Sheffield United are now considering legal action 法律诉讼 against West Ham but it looks highly unlikely that any legal moves will prevent Sheffield from going down.
