David Beckham has played for England nearly 100 times
David Beckham is set to make a surprise return to international football for the first time since the 2006 World Cup.

The former skipper 前任队长 of the England squad has been recalled to the national team for two games: Friday’s friendly 友好比赛 against Brazil followed by the Euro 2008 qualifying match 资格赛 against Estonia in June.

No panic

Beckham’s return marks a surprising u-turn 180度转弯 by the England coach Steve McClaren, who has not picked Beckham to play for England in any of the nine previous matches under his control.

However, McClaren says that his decision was not a "panic measure" 惊慌举措, meaning that he did not choose Beckham because he did not know what else to do.

The England coach said he recognised Beckham as a "big-game player" and that the former England captain had the "attributes" 能力 to help get a win over Estonia.

Steve McClaren has failed to win over 赢取 the England fans, many of whom have lost faith 丧失信心 in him after a series of embarrassing results.

McClaren also denied rumours 否定谣传 that other members of the England team were unhappy that Beckham was making his return.

McClaren promised that the squad 国家队 would "blend together", meaning that the players would work together in harmony as a team.

Some commentators have speculated that Beckham could now go on to reach 100 caps 100次代表国家队出场 for his country – he currently has 94.

The England manager has refused to be drawn on 做以评论 Beckham’s long-term future but said he "will cross that bridge when he gets to it" 等到了那时再说, meaning he will make further decisions later.

Of course, Beckham himself is very happy to rejoin the team following an excellent season with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Although he will soon be moving to Los Angeles to play out 踢满合同期 his club career, Beckham feels playing there could improve his chances of appearing regularly for England.

He said training "with the humidity" 湿度 in America could make him fitter than ever, and therefore a better player for England.
