张川:第二代华人的困惑
张川6岁随父母来到英国定居,现在在Newstead Wood中学学习。她用英文为我们写下了夹在中西两种文化间的海外第二代华人,对自己身份产生的困惑。 --编者

When I look in the mirror every morning, I see a 15 year old Chinese girl, but does this mean that I am truly Chinese?

I was born in China but I have been living in England since I was six years old, meaning that I have lived in England for most my life.

I have adopted some of the English culture (文化), yet I will never forget my Chinese ones.

At school, I speak to my friends in English, but when I come home, I communicate(交流)with my parents in Chinese.

I celebrate Christmas (圣诞节); however I always look forward to the Chinese New Year(春节).

I will always have a Chinese name (that no one in England can pronounce first time round) and I will always have a Chinese face.

Yet living in England means that I will be living the same lifestyle(生活方式)as someone English. From this point of view(从这个角度来看), some may think that I am English. Even so, no matter what I do in my life, no matter where I am in the world, I will never forget my Chinese culture and I will always consider my nationality (国籍) as being Chinese.

Although I am Chinese, it does not necessarily mean that I only have Chinese friends. I have many things in common with another Chinese person such as our culture; however, this doesn't stop me from making friends with other people from different cultures. When the Chinese New Year comes around, some of my Chinese friends come over to celebrate (庆祝)with their families.

Nevertheless(然而), this doesn't mean that I appreciate my friends from other cultures any less. This is because my culture will never be a factor when it comes to having new friends.
