Complaint
A listener complained that it was inaccurate and misleading for a contributor to refer to the UK as 鈥渙ne of the richest countries of the world鈥. The ECU considered the complaint against the standards for due accuracy set out in the 大象传媒 Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
This edition of Analysis looked at the future for the Metropolitan Police following a report by Baroness Casey on standards of behaviour and the internal culture of the force. 聽The focus of the programme was on whether the force can change and, if so, what changes might be necessary. 聽In that context Baroness Casey expressed concern at an incident where she said the Metropolitan Police had had insufficient resources to provide appropriate cover for the body of someone found on the street, adding that she found it 鈥渄eeply upsetting鈥 that this had happened 鈥渋n one of the richest countries of the world鈥.聽 In the ECU鈥檚 judgement it was unlikely members of the audience would conclude she was stating an incontrovertible statistic about the UK economy, particularly in the absence of any context to explain the basis for her assertion and the fact there was no particular economic focus to the discussion.
