Complaint
These bulletins included a report by the 大象传媒鈥檚 Political Editor Chris Mason about Liz Truss鈥檚 party conference speech. 聽The report ended with footage of her leaving the conference venue and running to get into her car while the Political Editor said: 鈥As for the Prime Minister, she couldn鈥檛 leave quickly enough. She can run away from this conference but not from the immense challenges she confronts鈥.聽 A viewer complained that this commentary was misleading and untruthful, because Ms Truss had been running only to avoid the rain.聽 The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 大象传媒鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
In the ECU鈥檚 view it would have been apparent to viewers that the rain was the cause of Ms Truss鈥 apparent haste.聽 In the light of this and the fact that there was noting in the preceding five minutes of the report to suggest Ms Truss would have been literally in a rush to escape the conference, the ECU considered viewers would have been likely to understand the commentary as metaphorical and would not have been misled as to the reason for her behaviour.
