Complaint
Two viewers complained this programme presented an inaccurate and misleading account of the role of badgers in spreading TB among cattle. 聽The ECU considered whether the programme met the required standards for accuracy and impartiality set out in the 大象传媒 Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The programme set out Sir Brian May鈥檚 views and experiences as a long-time opponent of the policy of culling badgers to prevent the spread of bovine TB in cattle. 聽However, taken as a whole, the ECU did not agree with one of the suggestion by one of the complainants that the programme 鈥渃ompletely ignored or dismissed鈥 the research and studies which explain why badgers continue to be killed in some English regions. 聽Viewers were shown cattle being tested for the disease and the programme included numerous references and contributions, including from farmers, which explained why the presence of infected badgers is regarded by many as a threat to cattle. 聽The programme also made it clear there is a significant level of disagreement about the issue and whilst it was presented by Sir Brian, his was not the only view represented. There were recurring themes in the programme which in the ECU鈥檚 view ensured an appropriate range of views were given due weight and prominence.
