Complaint
A listener complained that Jeremy Vine had been both inaccurate and biased in expressing a personal opinion on the causes of the 2008 financial crash, to the effect that it did not result from financial issues which started in the US (as stated by his interviewee), but from mismanagement of the economy by the last Labour government.聽 The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 大象传媒鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy and impartiality.
Outcome
Mr Vine was interviewing a Labour Peer who claimed that the 13 years of Labour government up to 2010 had made 鈥渕assive improvements to this country鈥, and pointed out that the last years of Labour鈥檚 term in office had seen severe economic difficulties, which the interviewee attributed entirely to a banking crisis with its origins in the US.聽 In the ECU鈥檚 view, Mr Vine did not express any opinion on the origins of the crisis in the exchange which followed, but simply challenged assertions made by the interviewee.聽 There having been no expression of opinion, the question of the accuracy or impartiality of a particular view of the origins of the crisis did not arise.
