Complaint

An item on the Prime Minister鈥檚 official visit to India described him as being 鈥渙f Indian heritage鈥.聽 A listener took exception to this, on the basis that his family originated from an area which is now part of Pakistan. 聽The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 大象传媒鈥檚 editorial standards of accuracy.

Outcome

The ECU noted that the Prime Minister鈥檚 grandfather came from an area which was part of British India at the time, and in any case considered that the designation of someone鈥檚 heritage is not an exact matter concerning birthplace but relates as much to a question of personal identity.聽 In the light of the Prime Ministers own remarks on the topic and of references to him in Indian newspapers during his visit as 鈥淚ndia鈥檚 son-in-law鈥, the ECU saw no grounds for considering the item鈥檚 description of him to be inaccurate.
