Reports about Sir James Dyson, 21 April 2021

Complaint

Various 大象传媒 news outlets on 21 April carried a story about Sir James Dyson鈥檚 text exchanges with the Prime Minister in connection with the manufacture and supply of ventilators.聽 Two members of the audience complained that the reports had contained inaccuracies about Sir James鈥檚 position in relation to the Conservative Party, and that the steps taken to correct them were insufficient.聽 The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 大象传媒鈥檚 Editorial Guidelines on accuracy and on correcting mistakes.

Outcome

Some versions of the story were incorrect in describing Sir James as a prominent Conservative supporter, and this was a serious inaccuracy.聽 However, the ECU noted that the 大象传媒鈥檚 apology to Sir James (which he had accepted) had been widely and prominently reported, and judged that this, together with the posting of a detailed correction and apology in the Corrections and Clarifications page of bbc.co.uk was sufficient to meet the requirement of the guidelines that serious errors should be corrected quickly, clearly and appropriately.
