Swimming against the Tide, Radio 4, 11 October 2022

Complaint

A listener complained that the programme was unbalanced because it dealt only with the experience of black people in England in relation to swimming.聽 The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 大象传媒鈥檚 Editorial Guidelines on impartiality.

Outcome

The Guidelines on impartiality say programme makers 鈥渕ay produce content about any subject, at any point on the spectrum of debate, as long as there are good editorial reasons for doing so鈥. 聽The stated purpose of this programme was to explore the background to statistics from Sport England which estimate that 95 per cent of black adults and 80% of black children in England do not swim.聽 In the ECU鈥檚 view, this constituted good editorial reason for exploring the topic, which was not such as to raise issues of impartiality.
