Essential
oils are extracted from the flowers, fruits, leaves, stems
and roots of flowers, shrubs and trees
Ancient
civilisations such as in Greece, Egypt, China and Rome used
scented/aromatic oils for the purposes of physical, mental,
emotional, and/or spiritual well-being.
The
earliest references of aromatherapy are images on the walls
of the Lascaux caves in France which are thought to date from
approx. 18,000 B.C.
In
the 1930's French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse published
a book about the anti-microbial effects of essential oils
in which he used the term 'aromatherapy'.

Reflexology
is a complementary therapy that works on the principal that reflex
areas in the feet and hands correspond to certain parts of the body.
Treating the whole foot can have a relaxing, balancing, detoxing and
healing effect on the whole body.
What
to expect
The treatment itself usually takes about an hour including a consultation
of around 15 minutes. The consultation helps the practicioner build
up a picture of the client's overall health and lifestyle and checks
for any medical or health issues.
During
a treament the client removes their socks and shoes and lies on
a massage couch normally with the back upright. The reflexologist
then cleans and examines the feet.
The
reflexologist will then note the size, colour, shape, odour, texture,
temperature or any hard skin, blisters, corns or infections of the
feet. This helps indicate any problems or areas of congestion in
the body. They will apply a small amount of talc or cream to help
work the reflex points on the feet.
St
Ives based
reflexologist Jane Taylor says: "The treatment starts and ends
with relaxation techniques over the whole foot. The reflexologist
will then cover each reflex point from toes to heel and on the surface
of the foot.
"They
work on one foot at a time, using thumbs and fingers with pressure
that is firm but not painful. They may then re-work any particular
sore areas which indicates inbalances in those areas."
It
is claimed that reflexology can help reduce many common ailments
including stress, pain, menstrual problems, digestive problems,
headaches and insomnia.
A
typical treatment will last about 45 minutes and prices will vary.
You can expect to pay anything between 拢20 and 拢50 for
a treatment. Reflexology treatments are offered at most holistic
and beauty therapy centres throughout Cornwall.
