Plans for the future of Mevagissey Harbour are to be studied thanks to a 拢50,000 grant.

The regeneration scheme would include a new flood defence scheme, improving working and leisure facilities in the village.

"The Harbour Trust has been working on this regeneration programme for about tow and a half years," says Hugh Bowles harbourmaster in Mevagissey. "We have taken the views of local people and the fishing community to come up with the scheme we are looking at now."

The main aspects of the scheme include the building of a breakwater outside the harbour. This would prevent storm water from reaching the village.

"This project looks at the use of renewable energy, the provision of modern facilities for fishing and the pleasure boat industries," explains Hugh.

"The economy of the area is the central part of this scheme."

Harbour History

The inner harbour dates back to 1774, and the outer harbour to 1888.

The outer harbour walls were washed away in the storms of the great blizzard in March 1891. They were rebuilt and completed in 1897.

Next step

The study is the first major step in the Harbour Trustees 50-year-plan for preserving and enhancing the harbour.

Extensive consultations on the draft proposals will be carried out during March.

Scott Wilson Oceans of Charlestown, alongside Atlantic Consultants of Truro will carry out the study.
