Tim Minchin @ WAC

By ´óÏó´«Ã½ Coventry & Warwickshire's Martin Winch
Find out what our reviewer thought of Tim Minchin when he performed in the Theatre at Warwick Arts Centre on Sunday, 25 February.

Having never seen him perform before, I always knew I was taking a punt on Tim Minchin. But it was a calculated risk. He came on good recommendation. There were plenty of good reviews and I knew he’d bagged the 2005 Perrier Best Newcomer Award.

As for style, well I had seen that his hair was a mess and had been told to expect music.

All the ingredients for an interesting night then.

Witty and clever are two words that aptly describe Minchin. You could add piano and barefoot as well, but then that would be four and too many words spoil the review. And I don’t want to write a bad one – I have potted plants around my house and the Aussie comic/musician promised to deposit horrible things in them if reviews weren’t positive.

I digress. Apologies.

Minchin is a fantastically potty-mouthed, revved-up Vegemite version of Richard Stilgoe for the 21st century.

The comedian’s rhyming couplets, triplets, sonnets and songs were a joy to listen to.

He effortlessly took an issue, such as society using too many plastic carrier bags, and turned it into a comic skit/song with bolted on merchandise too. He didn’t miss a trick.

The man was like the subject in his song Inflatable You. Pumped up. And he certainly didn’t let me down.

So congratulations to Minchin, another positive review.

But then I do own a couple of yuccas …
