The Anniversary

In 1918 the diocese of Coventry was created and St Michael's was designated as its cathedral.

In WW2, on the night of 14 November 1940, the cathedral was devastated by bombs.

It was rebuilt in the spirit of reconciliation and The Queen laid the foundation stone on 23 March 1956.

The new cathedral was consecrated on 25 May 1962, in the presence of The Queen.

The Bishop of Coventry was one of the visitors to the rebuilt cathedral in the early 60s.

He said:

"One weekend is not enough to mark the remarkable happenings that have taken place around the cathedral. But we can focus our gratitude to God who brings life out of death and hope from despair."

The Very Reverend John Irvine, Dean of Coventry said the message of the cathedral is an important part of the celebration:

"As we celebrate the consecration of our Cathedral, we will focus on the story it enshrines - a story of destruction and forgiveness, of death and resurrection."
