Coventry is repeating its very popular Black History Month this year with exhibitions and events in collaboration with Coventry Black Experience.
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum have a series of events and exhibitions while the Warwick Arts Centre are hosting a number of special evenings.
Below are details of some of the special shows and activities on at both venues for Black History Month in October 2002.

The First People of the Kalahari exhibition

Exhibition of photographs by Amanda Gazidis capturing the lifestyle and culture of the Red People, also known as Bushmen, from the Kalahari Desert, Botswana.
Amanda spent over two years in Botswana photographing the Red People. The photographs portray these magical people as they are with simple beauty, rich culture and deeply connected to nature.

Coventry Lives

Coventry Lives is a series of recorded interviews of the people that live in Coventry, edited onto CD for museum visitors to engage with.
For Black History Month, you can listen to the beliefs, problems and lives of a few Coventry citizens from African and African Caribbean backgrounds.

The Belgrade Theatre Bistro
The theatre will be hosting a free To Kill A Mockingbird post-show poetry reading session in the theatre's Bistro.

The original and free-flowing music of young Cuban pianist Omar Sosa offers an intimate acoustic experience, encompassing cha-cha grooves and Monkish phrases, Yoruba chants, hip-hop beats, and rhapsodic melodies.

'Tom Molineaux: Britain's First Black Championship Boxer'

This 50 minute play is about Molineaux' turbulent career from being a slave in America to being Britain's best prize fighter, whose moment of glory was snatched away by prejudice.
The powerful and emotional performance by Kevin Rowley as Molineaux is packed with physical energy, passion and information about slavery and the African diaspora.

Join poet and activist Roi Kwabena in an evening talk charting the contributions made by black women in history, followed by a feast of poetry and prose by contemporary black women poets from Heaventree Press.
Throughout the talk, Roi Kwabena will explain how black women were involved with politics, writing, feminism and the trade unions. Prominent women highlighted include Harriet Tudman, Mary Seacole, and Phyllis Wheatley.

Mary Seacole and her Suitcase of Secrets
Herbert museum
Join Phyllis Williams in a morning of living history as she uncovers the story of Mary Seacole using objects from her suitcase.
Mary Seacole served on the front lines of the Crimean War in the 1850s, like Florence Nightingale. She had little support for her good work and is unknown to many a history book.
This will be an enjoyable story about the achievements made by this admirable black woman. It is ideal for children and family groups
