Over 3000 participants and 53 communities have contributed to the Public Bench and the Future Monument in Coventry's newly created Millennium Place.

Through the bench and monument Coventrians and visitors to the city have publicly announced their friends or heroes by having a free plaque linking their name with another attached on the art works.

The public monuments were devised by the Phoenix Initiative and artist Jochen Gerz.

The Public Bench and the Future Monument

The Millennium Clock
One of the initiative's other public artworks - The Millennium Clock
The Public Bench, a dramatic bench, 45 metres long sweeping round the north edge of Millennium Place, will be covered with plaques.

A sea of small plaques will be all over the concrete back of the bench and each will bear the names of pairs of Coventry people or visitors to the city.

The Future Monument is a five-metre high glass obelisk surrounded by glass plaques. The monument highlights the often hidden changes from enemies of the past becoming friends of the future.

The artist

Master planner Sir Richard MacCormac chose Jochen Gerz because of his unique approach to the viewer, engaging people in the creative process as authors.

Gerz is an internationally highly-regarded artist, famous for his public anti-monuments, in particular the Monument against fascism in Hambourg, the invisible Monument against Racism in Saarbrucken and the controversial Words of Paris, 'exhibiting' homeless people in front of Notre Dame in Paris.

About the Phoneix Initiative

The Phoenix Gardens
One of the newly created gardens, in Priory Place
The Phoenix Initiative is a 拢50m regeneration project around Priory Place in Coventry City Centre.

The multi-platform project involves archaeology, public artworks and the creation of new gardens, housing, shops and cafes.

The newly created area is called Millennium Place and will provide a striking new context for the Museum of British Road Transport.

You can read more about the area's archaeology by following the link on the left.

The Phoenix Initiative link on the left goes to the official site, which has complete details of the project and of the artists involved.
