 |  | As part of a newly developing strand of culturally diverse work, the Belgrade Theatre has joined forces with Coventry's Asian Arts and Cultural Forum to present the very first Festival of South Asia.

On Saturday 10 August a host of local performers and artists will bring the exotic spirit of South Asia alive, with demonstrations of music, dance, Saree dressing, cookery, comedy, animation, poetry and literature.
The day's events are outlined below. For a detailed timetable, follow the festival programme link on the left.

听A host of free daytime events and exhibitions will take place in the theatre foyers, studio, and in Belgrade Square.
Daytime events begin at 10.30am. Outside the theatre, Belgrade Square will be filled with the evocative sounds of bhangra and dhol, along with demonstrations of contemporary dance by Sabira Mollah.
Music and drama
In the Belgrade Studio there will be a range of performances, from Bengali tunes and sitar playing to classical song and drama workshops.
Digital art
The theatre will also be showcasing the work of Tajinder Dharmi, a local artist animator who has been experimenting with digital media since 1995.
Arts, crafts and storytelling
In the theatre foyers, bar and bistro, visitors can enjoy a whole range of arts, crafts and story-telling. Bharti Gohil and Dilwara Begum will be exhibiting their visual art in acrylics, fabrics, photography and mixed media that reflect the bold and lively colours of the East.
Saree dressing and poetry
Other highlights include a demonstration of saree dressing by Bhandan Ladies' Group and poetry and Punjabi storytelling by Jasvir Virk, an established writer, poet and radio presenter.
Food, beadwork, music and mehendi
Visitors can then taste the delights of Asian cuisine and see examples of beautiful Rangoli beadwork by the artist Panna Chauhan. Kasvir Gupta will be giving a talk on the wealth of languages in India, whilst two local artists will be demonstrating the skills of mehendi body art. DJ Ronak Mela will be spinning dhol beats and Bollywood sounds throughout the day.

Music
Evening events will start with sitar and tabla players, the Naamdhari Ensemble, followed by bhangra dance and music from Punjab Arts.
Comedy
Birmingham Asian Arts Company will then take to the stage to perform an excerpt from the comedy Chacha's Family - based on the true story of a large Asian family living in the UK.
Dance and music
Highly acclaimed Mrittike Arts will present a breathtaking programme of Indian folk dance, evoking the magic and mystery of Gods and Goddesses in Hinduism, followed by a stunning set from Silinder Pardesi, the multi-award-winning bhangra star.
