Skaters, roller bladers and BMXers in Kenilworth have had the longest wait of their lives as Warwick District Council took months to decide on where to build a new skate park.

ÌýKenilworth School site
Kenilworth School lost out
But now, at last, the dream of having their own skate park is getting closer to reality. The council has decidedÌýCastle Farm is going to be the site for the park.

Is this the right decision? We went to the three shortlisted sites and had a look around.

I took a photos of each site, showing some of the good bits and not so good bits the council had to think about.

Each site is slightly different in ways that could have make a huge difference to whether it worked for you.

Trying to think like a councillor and a skater, I've come up with these as possible points the council had to consider:

ABBEY FIELDS

ÌýAbbey Fields ruin
The ruin at Abbey Fields - why the decision might not have gone this way
Good

  • Very good for busses or lifts
  • Would be unique – being next-door to the castle and abbey ruins
  • Could be good for big competitions as it’s easy to find and there’s loads of parking
  • Already got sports fields and a kid’s playground so the council might agree it
  • Close to the swimming pool and snack hut
Bad

  • Very soggy and might flood – wakeboarding anyone?!
  • Not that close to town
  • English Heritage have to agree the plans
KENILWORTH SCHOOL

ÌýKenilworth School site
Doomed to stay just a tennis court
Good

  • Ace if you go to the school
  • Close to shops
  • Very handy for busses
  • Next-door to the Meadow Sports centre
  • No dogs allowed – so shouldn’t have poo problems!
Bad

  • Teachers (need we say more?!)
  • Not that close to town
  • No room for expansion

The winner - CASTLE FARM!
Ìý
ÌýCastle Farm sheep
Your new audience at Castle Farm!
Good

  • Already has a small ramp so might not be such an issue for neighbours etc
  • Would be one of the only skate parks in the country next to horses and sheep!
  • Next to the recreation centre
  • Has lots of free parking, for if you’re getting lifts
Bad

  • Tucked away – not that easy to find or get to
  • Not very close to town
  • Lots of dog-walkers (could be lots of poo)

What do you think of the sites?

Have the council made the right decision?

Do you think it'll be ready for the summer?

If not, where will you skate until then?

Katie from Kenilworth said:

"I have heard a lot about the planning of this skate park for a very long time seeing as i live in kenilworth and i am not expecting much to be done about it... i do not go skateboarding but i thought it was a good idea, however after the massive events at Abby Fields i have thought differently how can they want us to build them a skate park costing lots of money when they do very bad things in abby fields.

"when i read the kenilworth weekly news i heard the opinion of a skate boarder and he thought it was all ok for them to cause havoc at abby fields.

"it would also be horrible to build the skate park at abby fields when all of this goes on, it is grantee it would be vandalized, if you look at castle farms ramp it is covered in graffiti."
