The story is about a young Irish woman, Yvonne who lives in a strict Catholic family who is faced with difficult decisions (which are inevitably made for her) when she falls pregnant out of wedlock at 16 years old.

These difficult decisions are highlighted years later when she is invited to her niece's wedding in Coventry. The happy occasion and the events at the wedding trigger her memories of the past.

The performance deals with issues of confronting problems, religion, sacrifices that was made in the name of shame in strict religious communities, and how our attitudes have changed dramatically in just 30 years.
There are a lot of local references to Carey's and The Finbarrs and the Walsgrave hospital, which gave the play a really positive local feel. Many of the actors live in and are from Coventry so the Coventry accents were also spot on.

There is an excellent Irish dancing scene in the play, that uses professional dancers. This is a really nice touch to the play. Although it's not a musical, music and dancing is subtly incorporated into the production. A touching song is sung at the wedding by the lead character Yvonne.
The humour was brilliant throughout, the dialogue very witty, some of the lines made you laugh out loud!
The set was very simple with minimal props, but was very effective and true to the era. The humour was really brought in with the set changes with work men wearing luminous jackets.
The play is set half in the present and half in the past. The transitions from the past to present scenes were well directed and considered, with the lighting effectively changing the mood intensity of the scene.
It was an excellent night. I really enjoyed it. You could tell the audience loved it as well. I would recommend people to go and see this while it's still on.
The Wedding is on from Thursday 25 April - Saturday 4 May
