In my opinion, Cumbria has to be the best part of Britain to live in - stunning scenery, lots to do, warm and welcoming people and so much more going for it! I have to pinch myself sometimes to check that I'm really here! How did you get into radio?Meeting Tony Blackburn's wife at the age of 7…..er…I was 7, not her! Where was your first broadcast? My Bedroom!! Where else have you worked?Various Commercial/´óÏó´«Ã½ and the peak evening show at Radio Luxembourg - remember that? The two Tonys, Christie and James What other jobs have you done besides broadcasting?Er..not much else. I sold Hi-Fi for a while. Favourite broadcasting memory?Radio Caroline! What are your local connections?Relatives and friends and years of holidays here. What would you be if you weren't a radio presenter?A male model!! What would listeners be surprised to learn about you?I'm really only 27 years old :-) Other stuff pinched from Tony's own website*:Education:- I blagged my way through several 'O' levels (remember them?) Likes:- Music, radio, Cult TV, pubs, eating out (no washing up!), The Carry-On movies, Cumbria's brilliant pubs, walking in the countryside, going to the movies, sunshine and most of all my family and friends. Dislikes:- Cruelty to animals, phoney people, political correctness, stupid laws and marzipan! Favourite Place:- The Lake District. Food:- Pizza. Music:- Steve Earle, Mozart, Elton John, The Sweet, Kylie Minogue, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Tom Robinson, Rock, 60's and 70's. Heroes:- Kenny Everett, Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Benny Hill, Debbie Harry, Tony Blackburn, Kid Johnson and Horace Cracksman. Humour:- The 'Carry On' films, Benny Hill and that great TV show 'Man about the House'. Fave Radio:- Radio Telstar South - Early 80's - London. Fave TV:- The Sweeney (Shut it George!) The thing about me that I'd change:- Find more time in my life to stop for a second! *He said we could, honest! Tony's broadcasting background:Well, after a spell on Hospital Radio and a few naughty 'Pirate' stations, I got my first show as a pro in the mid 80's. From Saturday nights to early breakfast/breakfast cover, the afternoon show on Radio 210 - Thames Valley. Then fulfilling a dream and doing the main evening show on the legendary Radio Luxembourg. After that working for Mike Powell at Fox FM in Oxford - Afternoon and Saturday show - first time launching a station - fabulous! Then moved to launch Pirate FM in Cornwall/Plymouth/West Devon. Again the afternoon show - loved the Cornish people. Then for family reasons moved to Star FM - launched 'The Breakfast Club' and saw the stations ratings go through the roof! Moved to work in Bristol for UKRD for a couple of years and then moved to Classic Gold and ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Gloucestershire and the breakfast show for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cambridgeshire based in Peterborough. Spent 2 years doing all speech - longed for music again. Stayed at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ with my Goldmine Show. Voiceover work I've done includes fronting TV and Radio ads, documentaries, and other corporate voiceover work. last updated: 22/05/2009 at 12:33 You are in: Cumbria > Local Radio > ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cumbria > Tony James |
