Derby Gaol: Condemned man's cell

Cell for a condemned man

Derby Gaol

It's not the nicest of places - but it just might be one of the most haunted in the county. Take our 360 tour of Derby Gaol and find out more about it here.

The old "Derby Gaol" can be found under numbers 50 and 51 Friargate in Derby. It is said to be one of the most haunted spots in the country.

The jail ("gaol" is an old-fashioned variant of the word) was used between 1756 and 1828 and was originally (it's believed) two separate cell blocks - in fact, it's thought the facilities could continue under neighbouring properties, too).

It is now a museum and much of the jail has been restored to its former condition.

Whilst the jail was being worked on, clues were found as to what some of the cells may have been used for in the past. For example, marks on the inside of the door of the debtor's cell refer to money and amounts to be paid. There are gallows outside the entrance - a timely reminder of past events.

As well as guided tours, the owner, Richard Felix, also arranges "lock-ins" on some Friday and Saturday nights. Imagine sleeping where a condemned man may have spent his last night!

What utter tripe!!! Those that beleive they have seen a ghost watch too many horror films or drink too much. There is are no such things as ghosts and the only spirits are poured out of a bottle. I have stayed in some of the most reported haunted places in the UK and Ireland all night on my own and witnessed or felt nothing! Get a grip and stop drinking!!!

I was at Derby Gaol a couple of months ago. Standing with my back to the wall (coward that I am) looking directly into the condemned man's cell I saw the brightest orb on the far wall. I stared at it for a good few seconds, glanced away and it was gone when I looked back. I checked everywhere to find where it could have come from, nothing. Daren't tell my friends what I'd seen, they would have left straight away.

hi, i went to the Gaol on 16th sept 2006, and stayed in the condemed mans cell by myself with a sony super nightshot camara, sadley i did not find any paranormal activity in. We all held hands and tried to get spirit activity, this did bring some weird sounds from behind the bar area and all i can say is very very good night out in the gaol, but not one Orb caught on camara, oh by the way I also think that the Tea should be free and not charge @ 拢0.50p each, all in all fantastic night and i will go back to see if i can catch anything on film, thanks for reading this comment.
