"This is a good day for my country," declared Dong Wei. It was the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics - and around 50 students gathered in the Market Place to watch the event.
Help playing audio/video The scholars were all from China and were in Derby as part of a programme to improve their English language. They were entertained by Wai Ling who took his costume along to perform a tradirional Chinese Lion Dance. The students joined in the countdown to the start of the ceremony and cheered enthusiastically as China put on its show-piece event. The closing ceremony will also be celebrated in style under the Big Screen - Derby is hosting a 'handover' party on August 24th to mark the Games being handed from China to London. There'll be an afternoon and evening of entertainment - culminating in a performance by Gabriella Cilmi (use the link on the right for more details).
