The five members of Matlock's Quirky Turquoise have all served time in a variety of different bands so it should be no surprise that the group's sound should be so schizophrenic.

Frontwoman and chief song-writer Diane Smith says 'eclectic' is probably the best way to describe the band's style.

She said: "The sound is a real mix. When people ask me to describe what we're like I say I can't describe it but when they hear us play live, they understand what I mean.

"It's a little bit jazz, a little folky, a bit reggae. I like so many different types of music that I think over the years it's all gone into one big bag, swirled around and come out the other side as Quirky Turquoise!"

As the band's principle songwriter, Diane takes special pride in the lyrics.

She explained: "Everyone seems to like our song 'Yellow Purple Tangerine'. It came about when I was working in a cafe during an in-between time in my life.

"I'd be writing songs in the evening and having all these arty ideas but nothing was happening with them. That's where the lyric 'yellow purple tangerine in her eyes when she shines' comes from."

The band have been circulating a three-track demo called 'Jelly Cream and Cakes' and played the recent world music festival 'Global Sounds' in Wirksworth.

Now they're hoping to record some more tracks and do some live gigs around Derbyshire - and of course offers from record companies would be most welcome too!
