Buxton's Caelan is one of 100 youngsters from Britain who have been selected for the trip in recognition of their contribution to sport. Whilst in Beijing Caelan will meet with like-minded individuals from China and Hong Kong who have been selected by their home bodies for the event as well. Already Caelan has a large amount of experience within sport. His involvement as a leader started with athletics coaching at his local club in Buxton. Since then he has been involved with many different sports as a coach, official and organiser. He know works as the co-ordinator of the holiday sports scheme at Buxton Community School Sports College. Caelan's most exciting moment to date came in 2006 when he was an athlete steward at the European Indoor Games in Birmingham. This meant that he was working alongside some of the top athletics officials and rubbing shoulders with the best athletes in Europe, an experience which he describes as "amazing". When in China the young people will spend some time experiencing the local culture and also visit some of the Paralympic events which will be taking place whilst they are out there. Throughout the trip it is hoped that the leaders will exchange ideas and theories about how they work and they be able to learn from each other about sports coaching and organisation in their own countries. When Caelan returns from Beijing he will look to put into practice what he learns on the trip as he continues his involvement with local sport. He will also visit primary and secondary schools within the high peak on his return where he will talk to pupils about his experience and also prompt them to think about and discuss both Chinese culture and disabled sport. Long-term Caelan is training to be a social worker but he is keen to stay involved with sport in his spare time as he thinks 'working with kids in sport is amazing ... everyone should try it.' last updated: 29/08/2008 at 09:17 Have Your SayLet us know what you think about the story or post any messages of good luck for Caelan You are in: Derby > Blast > Young volunteer's trip of a lifetime |
