Asda supermarket in Spondon was the unlikely location for Sir Cliff Richard's first visit to Derby in several years.

The 67-year-old singer, who has sold more than 250 million records worldwide, arrived at the supermarket to sign copies of his new autobiography.

The store allowed fans to start queuing five hours before Sir Cliff was due to arrive and by 1pm more than 400 people had begun lining up.

Sir Cliff signs another book

By the time the star pulled up at the shop, the queue had grown to more than 1,000 excited followers hopeful of the chance to meet their hero.

During the book-signing Sir Cliff remembered Harry Greatorex, the Derby man who helped bring about his transformation from plain-old Harry Webb to the far more rock 'n' roll Cliff Richard.

He said: "I wouldn't say Harry 'discovered me' but he certainly discovered me for his own Regal ball-room in Ripley!

"He came down to London to see me play and asked me what our band was called so he could book us to play at The Regal.

"When I told him we were simply called 'The Drifters', he said 'oh no that won't do, we want your name on the front of the band so it looks better on the board outside'.

"So realising that Harry Webb just wouldn't do, we went away and finally came up with Cliff Richard - and I can't say it's done me too much harm in the years since!"

Sir Cliff arrived at Asda shortly before 5pm and stayed for 90 minutes to sign all 850 copies of his book 'My Life, My Way'.
