Ockbrook is a pleasant, peaceful village within the triangle of Spondon, Ilkeston and Borrowash, about three miles east of Derby. It boasts two churches, four pubs, three shops, a post office and a cricket team and is internationally known for the Moravian school and settlement, one of only three remaining in the country. What have the lads seen? Find out in the gallery! The village's history can be traced back to Occa, an Anglo-Saxon who founded the village in the 6th Century - although there appears to be evidence of humans being around this area dating back to 10,000 BC! It eventually became part of Danelaw. The Moravian settlement was founded on the edge of the original village in 1750 and parts of it are still in evidence today. Red brick buildings, a chapel and the 1799 school remain - the school is now a boarding school for girls. The village hall, originally the old junior school, was badly in need of renovation and so in order to raise funds for this purpose, two old pupils came up with the novel idea of searching out old Ockbrook photographs to improve, copy and sell. Since then, the 250-strong collection has been put into storage - but it is hoped that some of it may eventually be displayed in the village hall which it has helped to restore. The collection contains photographs of village scenes and village people from the 18th Century onwards. It also contains Ockbrook junior school class photographs from 1911 onwards. Our gallery contains just a tiny sample of those images... use the links on this page to take a look! last updated: 28/10/2008 at 17:42 Have Your SayYou are in: Derby > Places > Places features > Ockbrook |
