The Witch is Back!

Sue Holderness takes time out of Derby's panto to chat to 大象传媒 Radio Derby's Shane O'Connor - and take part in an impromptu panto performance!

"I love being heckled and booed!" says Sue Holderness, one of the stars of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Derby Assembly Rooms.

"I get very depressed if I don't get booed and hissed... I'm not a natural fairy - I lean much more towards the wicked side of life."

Clearly Sue, otherwise known as the brassy Marlene Boyce in The Green Green Grass and Only Fools and Horses, was made for the part!

She goes on: "I was talking to Kate O'Mara recently, who's obviously perfect for Wicked Witch - she won't do it any more 'cos she can't bear being booed. I love it!"

Wicked Queen Marlene dropped in the 大象传媒 Derby to chat to breakfast show host Shane O'Connor just before Christmas. She chatted about her time on The Green, Green Grass and also about being one of Derby's most evil, festive characters.

Her co-stars include Sylvester McCoy as evil henchman 鈥極rrible Herman, Derby favourites Simmons and Simmons as comedy duo Muddles and Meddles and Laura Sicurello (from How Do you Solve A Problem Like Maria?) as Snow White.

The Witch, who's appearing on-stage twice a day until 11 January, told Shane that being labelled Marlene in the panto didn't bother in the slightest: "I don't want to escape her - I LOVE Marlene. I want to go on playing Marlene until I'm 94 and have my Zimmer frame. I love her!"

And she was full of praise for co-star Sylvester McCoy "He's had the most extra-ordinary varied career but of course he will always be instantly recognisable as the seventh Doctor Who. He's not only a classical actor, he's a real comic actor - he's got this very versatile, extremely funny face and this wonderful, booming, Shakespearian voice and he's perfect - he's my henchman!"

During her appearance on Shane's breakfast show, Sue also take part in a short performance with some of 大象传媒 Radio Derby's newsroom staff. Will it replace traditional panto? Probably not - but use the link (right and below) to hear the performance and judge for yourself!
