The speech of Southampton people, owing to their geographical location, is truly a most southern dialect. It could be described as 'urban wurzel.'This is recognising the rural sounding 'burr' of the inhabitants, a sped up version of south Hampshire dialects. Southampton's proximity to the south-east region and the London area, has the result that the all pervasive 'estuary' style of speech is becoming ever more of an influence, especialy amongst the young. I hope that in some way answers your query Saz.

i love the scouse accent!! :)i think it is really prejudice that have only ever heard Cilla Black talking have decided they hate the accent!! Scousers are very funny, happy, welcoming and laid back!! Bet uve never met a miserable liverpudlian!

Hello, I'm from Italy. I'd like to ask a question. Of course I can't understand much about english accents but I find that the London/Cockney accent and the Brummie accent sound very similar. So why is the Brummie accent considered awful while the London/Cockney accent is not necessarily considered that way?

hi can anyone explain to me what the southampton accent or voice is like?

In my day (1920s)I was encouraged to learn the proper English from 2LO (London Radio). I think we should go back to that. Some English speaking people cannot understand some accents on Radio and Television (my son in-law needs translation of Geordie, with which I am quite happy. having married into it. Some back-street Derby is rather abrasive.

No objections to any UK accents or dialects. Its just a shame popular TV talk is taking over peoples lives and affecting traditional local tounges.

I cannot abide the Nottingham accent or a Yorkshire accent. Both sound totally rude, abusive, patronising, and disgusting.

I love the Cornish and welsh accents as they are very celtic sounding, but i hate the southern accents, as they sound so pretentious and snobbish.
Andy, Chaddesden

I believe the southern accents sound more aggressive and interrogating. The northern accents seem more friendly and welcoming, the best ive come across is Lincolnshire as it is easy to understand.

I av now turned geordie...:) hehe xxx

Is there no one in Derby over 25? Regarding accents, accents are National, whereas dialects are local. The nicest sounding dialects are found in people born and bred somewhere between London and Derby.
Dan Danaher

I love the north Derbyshire accent and also Yorkshire, North west and Geordie accent but i hate the Nottingham, leicester, Scouse, Brumie and southern accents
