Our first destination is the site of both the original and present day customs houses.  It may be called New Street but it's actually one of the most historic locations in the city.  No two walls run parallel in this, Plymouth's most impressive monument to its nautical roots.  Near the place where Drake is reputed to have played bowls stands an impressive naval war memorial.  Smeaton's Tower once stood about 14 miles out to sea, on a clear day you can still see the stump.  Recently re-opened after years of neglect, the Art Deco lido is a landmark of seaside architecture.  Until the breakwater was built many ships were lost around Plymouth with great loss of life.  For centuries Sutton Harbour has provided a starting point for colonists, emigrants and adventurers.
