Coming in on a wing and a prayer

Magnificent women in their flying machines are the subject of a community radio play based on a series of interviews with female aviators.

Women pilots are the lead characters in a World War II drama adapted for broadcast on 大象传媒 Radio Devon.

Anywhere to Anywhere tells the story of the women aviators who were called upon to fly planes all over the country during the Second World War.

The play is based on a series of interviews with female pilots who formed a special unit of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) during World War II.

Some of the original interviews were with women pilots living in Devon.

Anywhere to Anywhere is adapted for radio by Sarah Welsh from an original play by Joyce Holliday.

"Joyce Holliday wrote her stage play with songs in 1985. Much of the dialogue was taken from transcripts of conversations with the women pilots who flew the planes for the ATA," said Sarah.

"I adapted the play in 1999 creating a new stage play performed by four women, a ladder and a parachute!

The radio play is a new version of this, but remains faithful to the stories of these amazing pilots."

The 大象传媒 Radio Devon production was performed by members of the Playgoers Society of Dartington Hall. The same group performed the original stage version in 1999.

The cast features Mavis Jones, Sarah Thomson, Debbie Plummer and Penny Grove as the wartime pilots Marion Wilberforce, Margaret Cunnison, Joan Hughes and Pauline Gower.

Brian Lethbridge plays the Director General听of Civil Aviation, Steve Grove plays D'Erlanger, the ATA鈥檚 first director and John Parker plays the Reporter.

Some scenes were recorded on location including Berry Pomeroy church, just outside Totnes, where members of the cast gathered to to perform the fictional funeral of one of the women pilots.

Anywhere to Anywhere is one of a series of radio dramas developed by 大象传媒 Radio Devon. It was first broadcast in May 2006.
