This walk takes in some of the very best views in the whole of the county. Start in Wembury village in the South Hams, by joining Footpath 25 opposite the Londis shop. Behind the bungalows turn right and follow the path across the open fields and down to the River Yealm. The Yealm estuary On the left of the path just beyond the fields is a sturdily built dry stone wall, and if you look over it, there are fantastic views of the countryside. You join the South West Coast Path part way down the lane, but we continued on to take in the views of the yachts on the river, and Newton Ferrers in the valley. We then walked back to the coast path, which is sign-posted.All along the route, the Great Mew Stone dominates the view - that, and the Yealm Estuary. We were lucky - there were clear blue September skies, and the views were breath-taking. The coast path is relatively easy along this stretch, but you still need to be reasonably fit and wear suitable footwear. View of the Great Mew Stone from Wembury You'll eventually reach Wembury Beach, where you can stop at the lovely cafe during the summer - or at weekends during the winter. From here, you walk up the steep hill and down the other side, which takes you back to the village. Alternatively, you can walk through the nature reserve alongside the road. The reserve is home to rare species, including the cirl bunting bird. In all,the walk is around 3.5 miles and takes 90 minutes to two hours, depending on speed. Allow extra time, if you stop at the cafe. Explore more about Wembury:
