One of the most spectacular stretches of the North Devon coastline has been gifted to the National Trust. A 26 hectare section of the dramatic and unspoilt coast at Welcombe Mouth has been given to the trust by another conservation charity, the Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT). The DWT has handed over Welcombe Mouth so it can concentrate its efforts on other sites it manages in the area. It's great news for the National Trust, which already cares for the adjacent cliffs at South Hole. The spectacular coastline (Neville Stanikk) Welcombe Mouth is a remote and wild Atlantic coastal valley, with spectacular and highly visible geology. The area is part of the designated Marsland to Clovelly coast site of special scientific interest (SSSI).听 The National Trust's property manager for North Devon, Steve Mulberry, said: "We are delighted that this spectacular piece of coastline will now come under our care. "The Trust's management will enhance the nature conservation value of the valley, improve access management and enable greater public enjoyment of Welcombe Mouth." The trust says it will protect the quiet but wild atmosphere of the valley and beach. "We will bring to the site our long experience of ensuring high quality and appropriate access as well as landscape and wildlife protection," said Steve. The trust will be working with the local community to ensure that the site is cared for and doesn't lose its magical atmosphere. Some initial work will be carried out, including minor repairs to the access track and footpaths. The trust also plans to organise some archaeological and biological surveys to be undertaken at the site. * Photos taken by Neville Stanikk, provided courtesy of North Devon AONB. last updated: 26/03/2008 at 16:46 SEE ALSOYou are in: Devon > Places > Places features > A Welcombe acquisition
