Stanley is about to go on holiday with his decrepit old father, who turns up thinking he is already at the guest house. The ever-spiralling situation gets increasingly out-of-hand as John busts a gut to juggle with the truth...

The South Devon Players - Brixham
...present the pirate drama The Trial Of Anne Bonney and Mary Reed. The debut of this production will take place on August 27th 2009 at the Old Brixham Fishmarket (on Brixham seafront) . Re-enactments of the capture of Rackham and his crew will take place earlier in the day as well, but the full show, including a re-run of the re-enactments, commences from 6.30pm. The show is free to all, completely family friendly, and follows on from one of Brixhams weekly summer "Pirate Thursdays" run by the Brixham Buccaneers. The fishmarket is under cover and therefore the production will run regardless of the weather. The two ladies who are the subject of the production lived in the Eighteenth century and were members of the pirate crew of the famous Calico Jack Rackham. Anne, and Jack being in fact, lovers. Mary Reed, it is believed, originally hailed from Plymouth, in Devon, and she led a colourful career as a soldier in Flanders, before becoming a pirate. Anne Bonney was born in Ireland, before her family emigrated to the New World, and one version of the story has it that after she and Mary escaped hanging by pleading pregnancy, she returned to England, and opened a tavern, somewhere in the Southwest. "Murder By The Book" is the next production at Shaftesbury Theatre Dawlish. Running from 4th-8th August at 7.30pm nightly at the Shaftesbury Theatre Dawlish, demand is likely to be high for tickets so early booking is advised, the box office is open now (except Sundays) 10am - 12 noon for personal callers, or by telephone on 01626 864050. The play centres on the writer and critic Selwyn Piper who finds himself at the mercy of his ex-wife Imogen an actress who is hoping she can be free of her husband and benefit form a joint insurance policy at the same time, things don't go too well for Imogen especially when she is "grilled" by a mysterious neighbour Peter Fletcher, also involved is the writers secretary Christine Scott, add to this a somewhat dopey publisher John Douglas you end up with a gripping story that is full of comedic situations and witty dialogue.

Laura Jury
This small non-profit theatre group that specialises in shows relating to local (Devon & Cornwall) history, is back, with an all new show. The Trial Of Anne Bonney And Mary Reed. This swashbuckling tale tells the story of two notorious female pirates in the Eighteenth Century, and thier trial; although historically the trial took place in Jamaica in 1720, one of the pirates; Mary Reed, was originally from Plymouth in Devon. The South Devon Players start their run of this lively family show, with a free show on August 27th at Brixham Fishmarket, at 6.30pm in conjunction with the Brixham Buccaneers Pirate Day. The action starts earlier; look out for re-enactments in the afternoon of the capture of Anne Bonney, Mary Reed and Calico Jack Rackham with other members of their pirate crew, with the actual theatre show taking place in the evening. If the weather is bad the show will take place over the road from the Fishmarket, in the Rising Sun pub. Following this, a show is planned at Brixham Royal British Legion, on September 12th, at 7.45pm (entry by donation ) in aid of the British Legion, and next year the show will be performed at Brixham's second Pirate Festival at the end of April 2010.

The scheduled presentation of "Home is Where Your Colthes Are" has been withdrawn due to production difficultiew. Replacing it is the hilarious farce "A Fly in the Ointment" written by the late Derek Venfield and considered to be one of his best. Directed by Geoffrey Wilddey, the play will be on stage at the Shaftesbury Theatre in Dawlish form the 14th - 18th April nightly at 7.30pm. The plot of the play centres aroud a number of questions about why certain characters are turning up at a bungalow in Sussex on a Friday afternoon in summer. Why is the Rt. Hon. The South Devon Players (Brixham)
The South Devon Players, a community non-profit theatre group based in Brixham return with a new show, a hilarious Tudor comedy, about three travellers, a pair of young lovers, and a black hearted squire, in a country inn, written by Kingswear based scriptwriter David Murphy, entitled The Squires Temptation, and directed by Miss Laura Jury from the South Devon Players. Shows will be performed in the next few weeks in local venues as listed below. The South Devon Players specialise in shows that either promote local history, or local writers, and have a small but dedicated team of members. A high percentage of productions are in aid of charity, and it is part of the groups "mission" to bring theatre to pubs, community centres (for example Brixham Royal British Legion club), and nursing homes, bringing theatre to those who may not be able to access theatre in a more traditional setting. This time the first two shows will be performed at Brixhams Royal British Legion club. This show is open to RBL members and non members alike, and all profits will go towards the British Legion. Bampton Players Pantomime - The Little MermaidBampton New School Hall - Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st February 2009 at 7.30pm. also Sat at 2.30pm.Bampton Players will again be staging a traditional style Pantomime, based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale of the Little Mermaid. This will be held at the New School Hall during half term this February. The story tells the tale of King Neptune and his battle with the wicked Sea Witch to rule the waves. This battle involves Neptune’s daughters, the mermaids and his youngest daughter, Miranda, in particular. Miranda falls in love with a sailor she rescues from a shipwreck caused by the Sea Witch and her band of dastardly wreckers and pirates. The people of the village and the lighthouse keeper become involved when the Sea Witch, aided by her pet, a giant octopus, forces the lighthouse keeper to turn off the light to bring another ship on to the rocks. There are lots of ‘it’s behind you’ moments when the audience can join in the action in true pantomime fashion. The production involves a large cast of local people of all ages out to have fun, so why don’t you come and join in.Tickets are available from the Post Office in Bampton priced at £4.50 for adults, £2.50 for children or £12 for a family ticket (2 Adults + 2 Children)
