Introducing
Millhouse
from
Teignmouth
Where
does the name Millhouse come from...?
We took our name from
a small wooden nutcracker that Boyd received for his 21st birthday. Millhouse
became a band mascot and could always be found sitting on the top of an
amp at our gigs. He became such an important member of the group that
we eventually decided to take his name.
Who's who and how did you all meet...?.
Boyd, aka Neil Emery and Ben Hayes are the songwriters. They also sing
and play guitar. Adam Crane's on Bass and Richard Jones looks after the
drums and percussion.
Ben and Boyd met through an old girlfriend
of Ben's who'd actually gone to school with Boyd. This was in the summer
of '96 and since then the band has taken many different line ups, but
it's Ben and Boyd who continue to be the band's direction and inspiration.
"Sunshine
Moon" is quite a lilting, drifting track, how did it come about..?
It's about that girlfriend of Ben's who introduced us and started the
Millhouse catalyst. After being together for many years the song tells
of her decision to journey to Australia for a year and the feelings left
by this.
You
spend a lot of time in Birminghman now but you do originate from Devon....
?
Yep, we were originally a 4 piece band, spending our time playing covers
in local pubs and clubs. We've undergone five changes to the line up since
then although Ben and Boyd still remain. We studied sound engineering
at Coombeshead College and got our City and Guilds and A levels before
moving to Sandwell College in the Midlands to pass our HNDs with flying
colours. Working between studying allowed us to save some money and buy
a small amount of recording equipment (which now totals over £20,000!).
We still get back to Devon quite often my (Ben) Mother runs the Cellars
Bar in Teignmouth it was Mum who told us about this site.

Good
old Mum!
What do you think about the current music scene...?.
We're quite disillusioned really.
There's so many manufactured bands out there and nobody really looks to
music for creativeness, it's all about money. The British music scene
is currently a bit bleak.
What
about all the recording equipment you've bought...?
£20,000 worth... and it would be nice to open it up commercially
but we've applied for several grants and funding, we've applied to charities
and even written to several celebrities to kick start the venture, but
every door we turn to gets slammed shut! We work full time in our jobs
earning money to buy more equipment and we're 100% dedicated. Our ultimate
ambition is to be able to play for people and concentrate on music not
money.
Millhouse
have also recorded a video to accompany "Sunshine Moon"

If
you DO become famous...?
We don't
seek fame as such, all we want is is for people to listen to - and get
enjoyment from - our music. We don't want to be rock stars - we just want
to concentrate on music 24/7 (and not have to worry about paying the bills!).
Finally then, whose records do you have in your
collection...?
Everyone's! From Paul Weller to Smashing Pumpkins, Neil young, Coldplay,
Travis, The Verve, Kinks, Small Faces....too many influences to name them
all.
