Devon Demos - with John Govier

Introducing Karen Taylor from Torquay
Karen Taylor

This is the second appearance on Devon Demos for Karen, she was also featured as a member of Barefoot in the Garden who were one of the first bands we spoke to when the site was launched. Now she's having a bash at a solo career - take a listen and then tell her what you think.

The track you've chosen is "See What You Can Find"....?
Yes, it was written about a year ago as a positive statement about being able to spot the doors that are opening and not just worry about the ones that have closed.

Was Karen right to embark on a solo project? Take a listen to "See What You Can Find" and then have your say by

Which three words best describe your music?
Gentle, Jazz, Blues

There's a very full sound to the track, tell us about the musicians....
This song was recorded via the flexible technology available today. The piano (Guy Gardner), double bass (Tee Marcheur) programmed drums (Colin Reece) and sax (Clive Ashley) were all recorded in Colin's studio in Torquay but then the string arrangement was added in Kent by Allan Broadbent.

If we took a rifle through your record collection what would we find?

Lee Ritenour, Phil Upchurch, Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy and Bonnie raitte.

Karen Taylor

How would you like the future to pan out for Karen Taylor?
I'd like to keep being inspired to write new songs, to finish my first album and get it published and released. And just to continue doing live gigs with people I like.

And where can we catch any of these live gigs?

The Karen Taylor Trio can be heard every Tuesday night at Churchill's in Babbacombe, Torquay, with Dennis Rossi or Tom Unwin on Piano and Pete Furnish on Double Bass.

So, if you become famous.....?
Then I'd want to have my own studio and keep doing small intimate gigs with the musicians of my choice. Oh and have enough money to shop, shop, shop....

You're a Devon lass - what's the best and worst things about the county?
The view a quarter of a mile from my front door, down over Torbay is undoubtedly the best. The worst has to be the preponderance of Karaoke Bars and Tribute bands down here.
