I know it's an odd idea to feature a "various artists" album, but the twin CBS samplers "The Rock Machine Turns You On" and "Rock Machine I Love You" were essential parts of every poverty-stricken student's record collection in the late 1960s, and introduced them to artists like Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, Spirit, Blood Sweat and Tears, and so on. It would be particularly nice to see the Great Society's original version of "Somebody to Love" get an airing -- far better than the Jefferson Airplane cover in my opinion.

Also from the same era, does anyone else remember the eponymous album by rock/folk/jazz band The Insect Trust? It would be nice to feature that some time.

On a various artists album of the week tip I'd suggest Arthur Magazine's The Golden Apples of the Sun : Espers, Joanna Newsom, Six Organs of Admittance, Vashti & Devendra, Scout Niblett, Vetiver etc...

Also I loved the two volumes of compilations/samplers of Colin Newman's Swim Recordings. Pitched between the more experimental/techno side of Newman-Wire-Githead and electronica with the odd tune bunged in for good measure it would be great to here one of those one week...

& the full double cd of the soundtrack to Zabriskie Point would be groovy one week...

Golden Apples looks like a similarly eclectic selection of good contemporary stuff. The prices for it on are ridiculous, but I see from the Arthur web site that it's been re-issued for $12, so if it doesn't appear in the UK soon I might get it as an import.

Honourable mention to a few more samplers from the 60s/70s: "Garden of Delights" from Elektra; "Picnic" from Harvest; "Wowie Zowie" from Decca; "Deep Overground Pop" from Polydor.

The Rock Machine follow-ups -- "Fill Your Head With Rock", "Rockbuster" and "Together" -- were patchy but had some good stuff on them. "Rockbuster" is notable for a picture for a picture of Arnie in a Charles Atlas pose, with a caption that mis-spells his name, somehow appropriately, "Schwarzeneggger".

I got Golden Apples with postage etc via Arthur/Paypal for about $19...well worth getting despite many being familiar with the acts on there.

Am loving the latest Six Organs of Admittance LP at present...

I nearly bought a copy of "Bumpers" - the Island comp. on LP at a record fair last week. Unfortunately, the bloke was asking a lot for it, as it was a first pressing.

Anyone check out the Charisma boxed set coming out? It looks pretty good.
