Interested to learn that Fluff Freeman had been pushed out to Saturday afternoons for his 70s rock show. He got his revenge by making it one of the most memorable progs to hit the airwaves. Is there anywhere I can hear some of these again?

ps Am I the only one who thought The Critical List was far superior in its original format on Saturday night?

I remember hearing Keith Jarrett's album of church organ improvisations Hymns/Spheres on Fluff's show in the late 70s for the first time, and being blown away by it. Could you imagine that happening on ANY daytime national radio show now?

Not really. But it's interesting to see that Spheres was used throughout William Friedkin's movie 'Sorcerer' together with Tangerine Dream's score and yet it barely gets a mention. It's also a shame that part of it remains unreleased (so far) on CD smiley - sadface

hey. i loved the critical list. I was in jail for it's entire duration and it corry and desert island discs kept me going. Didn't stop me writng a coupla cynical letters to s.m though.
What do you mean by the original format? the origianl didn't have a featured album. That wasn't introduced till the Strangley strange show. David Bowies' Ziggy Stardust, if memory serves. Then it changed again for, i think, the first show of 2003 when the theme concept was dropped altoghther and the songs from the featured album were increased to 3 (genereally-King crimson ITCOTCK only had 2)and the other songs related to that in more loose and varied ways. Stuart also played one or two re-issue tracks which were handy for filling in a few tracks when the links to the featured album were a bit fin on the ground('i'm drunk btw. sorry) and then of coursee there was the famousishishish Unsung feature. I got a mention by suggesting the gang of four.
I remember the reply to my letter wherein i castigated him for playing ccherly cole (or w/e she's called) song about sunset bouleveard after stuart dropped his 'stalints prohibiton of singles'. He said that it was better to change it than it become a 'desperate contrivance'.
So, w/e if you liked the first version(s) then great but it was flashier post NYD 2003 and i think stuart was right to change it.

I meant the change from Saturday nights to afternoons when the Critical List was confined to three tracks from an album in the last hour of the show. I gave up then.

Also miss Harley's 'Sounds of the 70s' with the rare stuff as a pose to the pandering to the 'give us summat we know' brigade with Walker. And how did the latter manage to get 2 hours air time?

Still, found nothing to surpass Fluff three decades on.
