If this thread is elsewhere my apologies.
Best guitarist of the last 30 years and John McGeoch isn't on the list?
Thats ridiculous.
I haven't seen the list yet (not sure where it's hiding) but I doubt either Fred Frith or Robert Fripp are on it. As for the current crop of Indie guitarists I don't think there's anyone with his or her own unique style, it's just strumming by numbers.
Have a look at this thread over on the Inside 6 Music board - it explains how the list was compiled
6 Music listeners' also posted their suggestions for inclusion on the list, on the board in these message board discussions..

Its difficult to take any of these types of lists seriously - someone's greatest is always someone else's poodle hairded shred merchant or indie noisenick- although for a bit of fun - what the heck. At least I can see what they are trying to do although the 1980s cut off is a bit too arbitrary so that Thurston Moore sneaks in (why no Lee Renaldo?) but the likes of Tom Verlaine and Robert Quine don't. Anyway perhaps we should have our own FZ list of 'interesting' guitarists. Off the top of my head:
Tom Verlaine, Robert Quine, Marc Ribot, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Sonny Sharrock, John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, Marc Ducret, Loren Connors, Zappa, Fripp, John Abercrombie, Keith Rowe, Kevin Drumm, Taku Sugimoto, Annette Krebs, Stephen O'Malley, Keith Levene, Kevin Shields, John McGeogh, Ralph Towner, John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Steffen Basho-Junghans, James Blackshaw, Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Davy Graham, Christian Fennesz, Vini Reilly, Christy Doran, Keiji Haino, James Blood Ulmer, Charles Elerbee/Bernard Nix, Renaldo/Moore, Harkerload/Cotton, Alan Licht, Michael Rother, Steve Hillage, Steve Howe, Phil Miller, Adrian Belew, Bert Jansch, Rhys Chatham, Larry Coryell, Michael Brook, Mary Halvorson..........phew!
Oh and a big shout out for a seriously under-rated player - Ray Russell. Composer of Bergerac, A Touch of Frost and a lot of other TV work but listen to say the first 10 mins of his 1973 album Secret Asylum for a free jazz sonic freakout that is the equal of anyone. Live at the ICA is another in a similar vein.
Happy strummings and sonic projections.
Oh and on the 6 Music list Johnny Marr gets my vote.
Cheers Peta. I've ticked the one I think tries a little harder than most to sound original. Let's see who comes out on top.
LONG LIVE 6 MUSIC!
Oh, I know the answer to this - it's Andy Gill.
Link Wray without whom etc...
I used to have this thing about Link Wray, I used to play him every Saturday...
Wot no Michael Karoli?
This list business has been out of control since 1999, and I say that as someone afflicted with the whole list thing. Sad that 6 Music's guitar thang takes its name from a dire TV series from ITV-1. That whole clash between commercial nonsense and public broadcasting highlighted again...
Weird list too - I love Robyn Hitchcock but would never really consider him primarily a guitarist. & Peter Buck certainly is of the Neil Young-school of riffing...
A shame 6 Music couldn't have been more adventerous - e.g. Lydia Lunch, Dylan Carlson, Stephen O'Malley, Norman Westerberg, Ben Chasny, King Buzzo, Joe Preston, John McGeoch, Keith Levene (despite pretty much nothing since he left PIL), Neil Michael Hagerty, Jon Spencer, Vudi, [insert name here]...
Charlotte Hatherley is probably on the list as she's found foxy - would you really say the lovely power-pop of 'Kim Wilde' or her work in Ash is as potent as Bob Mould's guitar meltdown on Zen Arcade or Beaster?
The chap from The Storks is a joke - less important than every guitarist in Guided by Voices. & Billy Corgan is whiney and last time I checked, the talented guitarist in Smashing Pumpkins was James Iha...Jeff Buckley wasn't the principle guitarist in his records/band either. Gary Lucas?
Still, no list can be perfect - and great to see Carrie Brownstein on the list. I was going to vote for Prince till I saw her. I caught Sleater-Kinney on their last (delayed) tour following The Woods and it was one of the greatest gigs I've seen. The stars were Carrie and her adventerous guitar-work and Janet Weiss drumming which made Grant Hart and John Bonham seem fairly lightweight...
Have the Kinney ever been played on the Freak Zone?
Zappa and Frith
Fripp
Zoot Horn
Thurston Moore

Annie Clark - aka St Vincent - is another one who gets my vote for guitar awesomeness. She can shred with the best of them. Some really good examples of this on youtube.
