Great. 3 to 2.5 to 2. What are the chances it's soon a one hour with just the professor and live freaks?

And George Lamb and Shaun Keaveny continue with their major label indie gubbins

just get rid of the pointless "dance anthems" show, it ruins the flow of sundays.

So, it begins. Either they are trying to spice up the station in the hope it gets saved (very unlikely), or they are going to make it steadily worse so that when it finally gets axed nobody will care any more (much more likely). It's a standard technique for wrecking a radio/TV product that someone wants to axe, called "selling ice cream in winter".

Thanks Trinoc. I see what you mean now! Two hours on a Sunday although it suggests we get an extra hour in the graveyard Fri night/Sat morning slot - who is ever going to be sober enough for that! Sadly I can see myself trying to record that and then listening to it an hour before the Sunday broadcast starts and 'pretending' its a continuous 3 hour show.

Actually there is an idea for the listen again - package it up as a three hour show.

If there is method in all this madness - beats me

I find it irritating as The Freak Zone should just be one show on a Sunday evening. As it was originally, it should be a 3 hour show. I don't want another hour in the middle of a night on another day of the week. I've complained, but I guess it's a deliberate act on 6 Music's part to lose any audience before the station is culled. Great.

I see that the schedule now shows FZ from 18:00 to 20:00 next Sunday, but the listings still say "150 minutes".

I'll reserve judgement. Maybe splitting off the rest and adding an extra half hour on Friday night will allow Stu to play stuff he couldn't play on a Sunday afternoon (a bit like when it used to be later Sunday evening). I've set it to record on time shift so I can listen over breakfast on Saturday.

The main issue is not just this programme, but the station as a whole.

I'm confused. The 6music schedule for Saturday 3rd April devotes an hour to 'freakier zone' from midnight to 1am and according to schedule the revised Sunday evening show has lost its 'freak zone' appellation. What's happening? as if I wasn't already suffering from enough 6music-related anxiety…

Interesting anomaly if you click through to Stu's own 6music page:

    Last on
    07/09/2008

    MORE: programme information

Broadcast Sun, 7 Sep 2008, 17:00 on ´óÏó´«Ã½ 6 Music but not available on ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer.

Stuart has a seminar from Professor Justin Spear on the work of Krystof Komeda.

Looks like the Freak Zone officially only existed from mid September 2008 (when it shrank to 2.5 hours?) until 28th March 2010. From now on it's just Stu as a "Featured DJ". I'm guessing that this is the start (or even the finish) of the Sunday slot turning into just another playlist-driven programme indistinguishable from the rest. I hope Sunday proves me wrong.

This messageboard is called "Freak Zone", so presumably the programme name change will provide the ´óÏó´«Ã½ with an excuse to delete it and so prevent anyone from seeing these critical messages.

According to the webpage for the 28 March Freak Zone:
    'Coming up:
Sorry, no programmes coming up in the next 7 days.'

The Freak Zone is dead. Long live the Freak Zone!
Well, it's probably dead in its present form, and the creation of the 'freakier zone' programme will I suppose eliminate some of the diversity from Stuart's Sunday night show. Given the present ´óÏó´«Ã½ management's attitude to 6music and what I consider to be its rather petulant response to criticism of its proposals, it comes as no surprise that it would seek to undermine one of the station's most distinctive programmes. I don't know whether that's a fair assessment, and I'll listen to Sunday's show with an open mind, but I strongly suspect that the 'strange and beautiful' elements of the show which helped to make it such a joy to listen to will be consigned to the graveyard slot, before that too vanishes. Sigh.

OK, now the Sunday programme is called Freak Zone again and a track list has been published. It looks like the old show with the Prof's half hour removed. There is no track list for next Friday's midnight programme yet, but it looks like it may be an extended version of the Prof's section. It features Sun Ra who is one of my least favourite artists, but at least it's the sort of stuff we have come to expect from the programme, so that's OK (for now).

I'm sure the listings had the first Freakier Zone for tonight (02/04) at one time, but it's now reverted to the classic Rock Sequence and it looks like the first Freakier Zone is next week.

I think enough is enough and think last week's Freak Zone can be the last I listen to.

6 Music is going and there's not an awful lot that can be done about that - it's been decided and there you go.

The changes in the Freak Zone are irritating - I have no intention of listening to the Freakier Zone in the middle of Friday night and seriously question splitting the show over different days.

It means that Sundays will be less enjoyable with the main programme cut down to 2 hours - 1/3 of the original programme I used to enjoy on a Sunday.

If the Freak Zone can return on Sundays at 3 hours long until 6 Music is culled, let me know, but until then I won't be listening.

A shame as the Freak Zone in its original format encapsulates everything great about ´óÏó´«Ã½ broadcasting. Dark days lie ahead and the message is "´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio is not for you - go and listen to Chris Moyles and watch ´óÏó´«Ã½3." Great...

Am I the only one who's welcoming the changes then? Sure, it's been divided into two shows. But we've also gained half an hour, bringing the FZ back to three hours, which can only be a good thing no? If you're unable to listen at midnight (myself included) then iPlayer it. It only involves taking an hour from your day.

The whole thing is a tad suspicious - the ´óÏó´«Ã½ announces that the network is closing, and very public support and plaudits are given to the FZ. Next thing, it's being split up into two sections at opposite ends of the week.

The most annoying thing about this split is that the Freaker Zone clashes with Mark Lamarr's "God's Jukebox" on Radio 2 - another rare example of ´óÏó´«Ã½ radio excellence. Some of us like Rockabilly and Ska as much as Dubstep and Mimimalism, so why the clash? You may as well put Late Junction on at the same time!!!!!

As for the Freakier Zone, Sun Ra seems to be far too general a subject for The Prof. Have the Beeb had a quiet word about the obscurity of his modules, and how the general listener may not comprehend his, I dunno, FREAKY music?

Maybe I am too cynical, and maybe it means that we can now expect hour-long modules on Alessandroni, UK 60s Library or Scandinavian prog? We shall see......

I'm not 100% sure what everyone is complaining about, just play the Freakier Zone on listen again, at 5pm, and then switch on the Freak Zone at 6pm. It's just like old times! smiley - smiley

Erm, you do know that Stuart was joking when he said that Sun Ra was one of Radio 2's core artists?

I honestly can't think of many places on national radio that play Sun Ra.
