Not even Stuart can be arsed to make an appearance this week(or spend half an hour splicing together some links to tracks)
Ive no problem with Matthew Wright, seems like a good bloke but dont want 2 hours of "my old mates Hawkwind" thanks very much
DONT KILL BRITAINS BEST RADIO SHOW WITH A THOUSAND CUTS...JUST AXE IT NOW AND LEAVE US WITH THE GOOD MEMORIES
Stuart is presenting the breakfast show on Friday.
What a great job (not!) ... breakfast and midnight shows on the same day!
Unless of course Freakier Zone is recorded. I've never been sure whether either FZ was going out live. The advance track lists suggest recorded, but then they sometimes don't match the exact tracks played, so maybe not. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever heard Stu respond to an email received during the actual show.
The Freak Zone is always a pre-record.

i've always thought Matthew a decent bloke but that first half hour was just an indie fest i.e. indistinguishable from the rest of 6 music. Ok Gong are playing now but i just don't understand what is happening at 6 music. Ever since the dreadful announcement things have been getting worse and worse with the FZ. Somebody said 'death by a thousand cuts' and that's how it seems. Why couldn't it be left alone as it was. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Someone somewhere has a lot to answer for.
Didn't think I'd be saying this, but Matthew's doing a really good job here, don't you think? I'm enjoying this...
A bit mainstream but he's making a fair job of it.

He was talking about linking threads...Here's a few. It's all so nice.So 'up'. So midtempo.I'm bored.
it is a bit mainstream...he's just played Beefheart. Almost a cliche' of what someone 'thinks is freaky'. V.unimpressed. I know he's into Lambchop 'cause he sat in for Johnny walker or even stuart sometime around in fact, around spring 2004 and after playing Up with people he said 'thank you to bbc2 for letting me play that' and i remember thinking 'so waht! you know some non-mainstrame music...you don't get an award for being cool, you know

And to cap it all....Here's some nice,up,dancy.Grateful Dead with a cute little quirky little pop number....I give up!
bring back stuart asap
I thought it was awesome - where else can you hear Here & Now and The Ullanators - this is what 6 music is all about for me. Well done and thanks Matthew, great show.
well, he tried his best, I guess a lot of us are used to stuart and can see how much better he is at it
the problem is that Matthew only seems to know about rock music
and sparklehorse and grateful dead are not `freaky' btw
yeah! great show but in wrong time!!! cause there is Only_One_Freak Zone - Only_Stuart_Maconie`s_FZ
btw Bruce Dickinson is leaving 6 Music soon so there is a place for James May or just Matthew Wright

Surely by posting on here, you're doing exactly the same thing, no?
I'd rather hear Lambchop or Howe Gelb on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio than Wham! and other AOR, MOR etc. Mark Lamarr had to drop the Rap segment of his show because too few people in the 21st Century understood just what it was!
I thought it was a great show, and that the sheer amount of negative politics on this messageboard is very disheartening.
I listened to it today, the show was fine.
I'm nearly finished the show and I loved it. To be honest, calling Beefheart (who Stuart played as a featured album), Gong, Here & Now and The Ullanators mainstream is a decidedly elitist viewpoint. Even Hawkwind don't really count, as how many people can name any Hawkwind songs, other than maybe Silver Machine?
I'll admit there was maybe too much rock stuff for some people (fine by me though), but it's a one-off. I didn't like the idea of the "Celebrity Specialists", but Matthew Wright's done a sterling job. Ruth Gordon did a decent, if somewhat chaotic, job sitting in for Craig Charles, despite playing a few too many songs that weren't really funk or soul. Not listened to James May yet, but what I saw on the playlist seemed good to me.
As for Bruce "leaving", that's not strictly true. The ´óÏó´«Ã½ have given his show the boot after 8 years, but they claim the network remains "committed to reflecting both genres (rock and heavy metal) throughout the schedule as part of its core music offering." - in other words Huey will play some Priest every now and then. Thanks for that.

Surely putting Wright in charge is a bit like putting Thatcher in charge of a miner's convention. I can see he's probably a nice person in real life - but he didn't seem to get what FZ is about!!! As many have pointed out, alt-country is all well and good, but it is hardly as boundary-pushing as Sun0))), Sun Ra, Moondog and the sort of acts normally featured on the show.

I don't know which is more depressing the actual show with its distinctly conservative playlist or the people on here who loved it and will therefore be used as evidence for condemning it.
I want to hear stuff i haven't heard before from people who are really well informed and curious, this was awful and i am gob-smacked that so many found it similar to the usual - honestly, there is no hope for the world ! Wake up you idiots you're about to lose the best show on radio ever!!!!!
The multiple exclamation marks tell us all we need to know.
just listening again (another time!) and enjoying every record
anyway it could be very successful Sunday with Stuart Maconie and Matthew Wright after him but it was not
