Having been a Jarret fan for many years and possessing most of his solo improvisational albums I have to confess to never having heard his most famous album the Koln Concert so it was with great pleasure that Stuart played this album. What a revelation his playing is (even with a dodgy piano) and it is easy to see why he divided crtics back then(and still does). I have come to the conclusion that with Jarret you just have to trust him and allow him to take you on a journey of discovery,
    .
His formidable technique and sheer melodic inventiveness bring countless rewards..........and for fans try The Vienna Concert where at times there is melodic creativity akin to anything Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovski came up with.

    Thank you Stuart.

Sorry, doesn't do it for me. Just tastefully trotting out the same old chords, progressions and riffs does not experimental or 'freaky' music make, improvised or not. There's great improvsed piano music out there - Cecil Taylor, Alex von Schlippenbach, Irene Schweitzer, Fred Van Hove and Marilyn Crispell are all far more exciting and worthy of the Freak Zone seal of approval.

C'mon Stuart let's have some proper peel the paint from the walls free improv not this.

Could never see what was so good about 'improv' - ususally means watching someone play safe because they are terrified.

All those you mention I am familiar with and indeed saw AvS leading the Globe Unity Orchestra over 30 years ago at the RNCM in Manchester. My problem is that I do like melodic content and Jarret never fails to deliver on this whilst most of those you have quoted seem unable or unwilling to acknowledge that melody can (and in my opinion should be) play an essential part of spontaneous improvisation.
As for trotting out the same old riffs, the same could be said about all of your favourites.
Does it really matter if musicians use and reuse themes.....after all Miles Davis used certain phrases and motifs to start many of his solos and this does not diminish in any way the creativity he usually wentb on to display.
I have CDs by Taylor and other free form improvisers in my collection but it is Jarret I invariably return to for melodic creation.
