On the 20th Of Feb Stuart played an interesting version of Yes's Roundabout - by the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band - and hearing it made me remember my surprise, about ten years ago when I lived in the States - on discovering that brass bands at football games played all sorts of rock stuff from the early 70's. It's disorientating, to say the least, to be confronted by a full band in some kind of psychedelic regalia, including epaulettes and gold buttons and lurid shades of magenta and green, leaping about galvanically, flashing those cheesecake west coast smiles and playing something strangely familiar - what is it?....hmmm......oh yeah.........*Iron Man*. The whole thing is so excessive, weird and charming and enthusiastically irreverent that you immediately want to sing the national anthem with everyone else. Of course you don't...but you *want* to. If they showed this sort of thing to Al Quaeda there'd be an immediate ceasefire, partly out of contemptuous pity and partly out of admiring fascination.
Anyway. I was just wondering if other Children Of The Zone had encountered any possibly misjudged but strangely life affirming cover versions. Marimba renditions of Holocaust by Big Star perhaps? Throbbing Gristle's Slug Bait on a washboard and ukelele, George Formby style?
My friend Duncan Clarke, who is Professor of Post Punk at Cambridge University and whose encyclopaedic musical knowledge makes PJ Spear look like a first year at Plymouth Poly, sent me a link to this track: Transmission, performed by a Steel Band in Manchester. I think it works very well.
How about the James Last Orchestra doing "Silver Machine"?
That's a strange and wonderful thing.
What it really needs though is Angela Rippon, smeared with woad and bare breasted like an Amazon, doing her impression of Stacia.
It would've been the next logical step from her appearance on Morecambe and Wise.
