Hello,
Just after midday and I've missed half the day again (as the time suggests). Fortunately it's been raining and I now have a splendid 1970's German pop/funk compilation to keep me busy. Expect to hear tracks from it from tonight onwards.
As for the cycling bit. The Giro is less than two week's away and I am very excited at the prospect. I'm also worried about how to gain control of the TV at the key moments. I'll tell the boy that one of the paricipants is Dora the Explorer that should do it.
Anyway, rather than bore my family and strangers on the bus with thoughts on who might win this first big race of the season and what it means for the Tour, I thought I'd start a thread where we can bore eachother instead. See how we go anyway.
Just to gently kick things off - What do we think of Cunego's chances, or will he save his legs for the Tour? Could this be Ricco's year. Or Pozzato?Soler? Forster?Di Luca?? And what about those climbs in the final week then eh?
Over to you, or not as the case may be. More music threads will be launched in the not too distant future.
Keep rocking
Gidx

With all those nasty pointy lumps at the end and assuming his Barloworld team is strong enough to get him there, I fancy Mauricio Soler as a dark horse for GC. Stephen Cummings for a stage win too. Or is that just wishful thinking.

My knowledge of cycling is entirely limited to the tour de france. I'd love to join in the discussion but have no idea of what goes on between tours. I don't do paying telly so I don't think I've got the right channels to keep up with it. If someone can tell me otherwise I'd be delighted to join in.
Would still love to hear about if from them what know.

"The Giro is less than two week's away and I am very excited at the prospect"
Takes me back to my days on the dole......

My tip would be Cunego. Don't Italian riders still see the Giro as the one to win over the Tour. Outside bet - Frank Schleck? And Cavendish to mark his emergence as a major contender with a couple of stage wins.

Insofar as I can decipher any of that, I assume you're referring to some sort of bicycle race. Beats me what you see in it. Bunch of imbeciles pedalling around in a big pack, impeding the progress of legitimate road users. The only entertainment value I can see in it is when they all fall off. Wouldn't be so bad if they took the trouble to dress decently, in a nice pair of tweed plus fours for example, rather than that vulgar garishly coloured stretchy material they always seem to favour.
I'm still disgruntled about finding the centre of Melton Mowbray closed to traffic without warning last Sunday - for, yes, a bicycle race - as I attempted to motor through the town. No disrespect to the denizens of Leicestershire, but it was irksome enough to find myself in Melton Mowbray in the first place.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Thanks everyone. I think the thread's going very well. Especially thanks to you Alan. Melton Mowbray indeed.
This gives me hope that I can soon start the "What's your favourite bus terminus" thread.
Altogether now...
Punk's not dead oh no, Punk's not dead oh no.
Carry on.

Steady on A_L. We're all legitimate road users and there's nothing entertaining about going over your handlebars when another 'legitimate' road user has pulled out in front of you without checking his mirrors. As for imbeciles, that word could be used to describe a good many road users, two-wheeled or otherwise.

Don't get me started on fellow motorists Al. I'm quite capable of directing my misanthropic rants more or less equally at all sections of the road using community. And I wouldn't take any pleasure in seeing you come a cropper while cycling along the banks of the silvery Tay (although come to think of it, it was hilarious when one of my colleagues took an involuntary dip in the Regent's Canal when he lost control of his bike on the towpath). But if several hundred of you set off together to whizz up and down mountains at unreasonable speed, inches from each other's wheels, arguably you are cruising for a bruising.
And surely you can't condone lycra?

I was spending the year trying to buy a fridge magnet in every county in the United Kingdom. I found myself in a grim Northern town on a Sunday afternoon trudging through the rain and pushing my cold, wet face against the windows of various shops displaying fridge magenets in their windows. They were of course all closed and were therefore taunting me. Anyway, I digress. The bus terminal was horrible too.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Since the refurbishment of Birmingham some year's back, I'd like to nominate Luton for the worst bus/coach terminus in England. Everything, and everyone, within it ooze defeat and pointlessness.
On the subject of the titanic clash of the two vs four wheeled - as a white van driver in a university town - my views on lunatic cyclists are unprintable. Indeed, often unpronouncable, and emerge as inarticulate roaring combined with creative gesturing.
Of course it's the 95% of suicidal, law breaking, non-indicating, lane swerving, red-jumping, one way ignoring, light-free maniacs that give the 5% of responsible cyclists a bad name.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
You might have a point there Alan - it certainly doesn't hide the 'extra' pounds!
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
i'm going to wait for the start list.
i will be cheering the boys on orange though (Euskadi) for no real reason other than liking the colour.
i have a feeling CSC will try to go for the Giro, they will have a strong team and a can't see Cunego's lot really beaing up to matching them.
one (almost) certainty, Robbie won't get to Milan

Hey Fist. Pot calling...
No seriously, I'm sure neither of us live up to our tabloid stereotype.
Cheers
Al (garishly vulgar lycra lout)

Can I briefly bask in my own glory for predicting a stage win for Mark Cavendish several posts ago?
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Nice one Mick, but will he make it two before Team High Road pull him out? Sadly, my tip Soler looks well banged up already. They've been hitting the deck a little too often for my liking - collarbones pinging left right and centre. Still, he's got time to recover. The last week will sort them all out.

Today's stage is a cracker.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Following it online doesn't quite convey the same level of excitement - might have to invest in Top Up, whatever that is?

It must be exhausting work lying on the couch
: )
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
That's blown it - Mauricio Soler DNF
I'll go for old man Gibo now
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
well... it'll all kick off tomorrow in the mountains.
looks like Ricco will be out to prove something and all the others out to disprove it! Judging by the posturing on the stage the other day, him and Diluca should be exchanging blows by the summit of the first Hors categorie.
i suspect Astana will be out to do something, although Kloden is now a marked man by everyone after he slagged them off in the press.
That's the thing about the Giro - it's a lot more like 'real' cycling than the Tour. those Italians really know how to hold a grudge and to wind each other up.
you never know, with all the fighting, Euskaltel Euskadi might win a stage!
as for overall... Benny Boy to hold onto the points jersey and a non-italian for the Pink as the natives will beat each other up too much.
Laurence

Bask away Mick! Cav got his brace then. And it just got a little bit tasty on Saturday. Astana not so mighty after all.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Contador then. All things considered a worthy winner, albeit without winning a stage.
I think it's a shame that he won't be in the Tour. That said, I wouldn'd necessarily have made him favourite. I really hope it's close going into the final Weds and the mother of all finishes.
Not that I want to wish the summer away.
Gid

Well cop for THIS bike lovers.
I was out on my bike last year..and I got a flat...and I REPAIRED THE HOLE....'IN THE FIELD' ... THATS RIGHT...I not only had the puncture repair outfit in that bum-bag thing that sits aloft the rear mudguard...but I EVEN KNEW HOW TO YOU ALL THE GEAR...THE TYRE LEVERS...THE EMERY PAPER.....EVEN THE CHALK!!!!
My mate was amazed.. his plan was to go to the nearest pub and call the wife to come and pick us up in her big car.
I retrospect I think his plan was the better of the two...but...yeah...even the chalk!
I'm great me.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
I'm off to Paris for the final stage of the Tour this year Marc, I expect to see you among the leading riders.
I thought you needed to carry a washing up bowl around with you to deal with punctures properly.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
LOL ...GOOD ANSWER!
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Marc, what was your method of inflation? Pump or mini compressed air canister? I swear by the latter, but that would probably not be in the spirit of a man who carries a full puncture repair kit, chalk 'n all.

pump - pump - pump - pump - pump - inhaler - pump - pump - pump - pupm - inhaler - pump - pump - pump - terrible swear word - inhaler ...
Thats as I remember it mate!

Well done Nicole - ably supported by Emma P. In atrocious conditions that was one heck of a ride.
What a difference a day makes - Roger Hammond would have loved the rain. Such is life.
Roll on the track squad.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Staff, Kenny, Hoy - OH YES!
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
shame the road boys can't do the same as the track team, tv watchers will assume cyclists just go around in circles for a few minutes.
anyway... another gold and silver for the women's pursuit as the final is all british. Romero will have medals in rowing and cycling.
a bronze in the points race today and more finals to come.
is it too soon to stake a place on the 2012 road route - i think it goes up highgate hill.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
This winning is infectious. Wiggins did what he needed to do - saving some gas for what's to come.
Chris Hoy is simply on another planet - great to see Ross Edgar take the silver.
Manchester was no fluke!
Reckon the road boys might be more of a force in 2012 - there's some good young lads knocking about, Bellis, Kennaugh etc - and Cav, of course!
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Magnificent stuff. Apart from in the baffing Madison.
There's a real danger that cycling could become even more popular in which case I'd like to say here and now that I preferred its earlier work.
The Vuelta ahoy. And the tour of Britain.
Then it will be winter but let's not dwell on that.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
Vicky P brilliant - to quote Gary Sutton, "she just went whack".
Good to see Jason give Chris a decent workout in the sprint - barring injury etc, its JK's in 2012
Cav not too pleased with Wiggo for having little left in the tank for the Madison - you can't have everything.
Fantastic few days.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
just the MTB and BMX left now
been a great games, odd not to see two frenchmen in the sprint final.
Hoy gets a velodrome named after him. Excellent! the sprinting was amazing... 73km/h or something over the last 200m. blimey. maybe they should put speed bumps in
viva la vuelta... and the worlds and ToB.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
I'm glad it wasn't just me and my mum who couldn't understand the Madison.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
At least we've now got synchronised swimming - you've got to love a sport that has the sequins, smiles and make up of ballroom dancing, and yet involves the sportiness of gymnastics (at exactly the same time as someone else), AND the holding of breath for inordinate lengths of time.
What's not to like.
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
they should combine more olympic sports, or the venues. runners could use the velodrome and think of the speed needed to stay upright on the banking. not to mention the fear of being run down bu Hoy.
the divers and swimmers can share the same pool. you'd lose marks for hitting a lane marker... or another athlete.
long and triple jump could land in the beach volleyball arena.
and the field events should also have a team element. the tv ratings for catching the javelin would be huge.
the pentathlon and heptathlon events should be done immediately after each other.
the triathletes shouldn't be allowed to change clothes either... i'd pay to watch the run part with them wearing cycling shoes.
Vuelta soon - hoorah!
laurence deep in the south korean training camp for 2012
Link to this forum: 6music cycle club (podssiblycycling centric)
The BMX looks promising. It may be a sitting down sport, but you've got to admire a sport that requires protective clothing (american football excepted) - any idiot can run round a track, not everyone is prepared to risk life and limb.

well, la Vuelta is in full flow now. i managed to get a mention on the eurosport commentary today by saying that Mapei also had their riders' names on the backs of the jersey.
no idea who will win, but i expect Contador to do something.
i also expect Cunego to do something - fall off. so far, so good, he's well ahead of schedule.

Saw the start of the Tour of Britain yesterday. Brillantly done. Well done all.
Back from holiday. It was lovely. Got some records to play later.

dang... i was there. so was Robert Elms... he hugged me! also bumped into Jo "mint sauce" Burt and we plotted on stealing things, but failed.
i saw petacchi and di luca before the off... and Millar, Backstedt. actually, think i saw all the riders as they were getting off the team buses and preparing to race.
totally failed to get any freebies. got a couple of nice pictures.
i tried to chat with an LPR man about Petacchi's bike as it was different to the others, despite having the same name on it. he assured me it was carbon. at least, i think that's what he meant. methinks he was being less than honest.
great race too, Di Luca and Petacchi had it sewn up the moment the break went.
glad you're back.

Ah, right, just caught up with last night's prog and everything has become clear.
Gid vs Lance - that'll add a new dimension to next year's tour. I'll look forward to Gid in lycra on a bike, unfortunately Lance will have the edge over him age-wise.
